The Life & Theology of John Calvin

By Patrick A. Nelson Ph.D. - Published on May 6, 2025
The theological contributions of John Calvin (1509–1564) established him as a foundational Protestant Reformation leader whose work deeply shaped Reformed Christianity's evolution. Originating from Noyon in France, Calvin first engaged in legal studies before shifting his focus to religious reformation efforts. Through "Institutes of the Christian Religion," his greatest work, he meticulously presented his theological system which then emerged as a foundational Protestant text. Calvin’s theological framework placed strong emphasis on divine sovereignty alongside predestination while asserting human total depravity which underscored the necessity for humans to rely on divine grace for their salvation.
