In the summer of 2008, Steve and Jackie travelled to Chile for a 17-day holiday. For the first 10 days they were in the far north of the country with a birding guide, Barbara Knapton, who looked after them as they explored the habitats of the Pacific coast, the Atacama Desert and the Andean Altiplano. For the remainder of the trip, they relocated south to the town of San Pedro de Atacama, based at a boutique hotel, from which they continued to explore the desert and the Altiplano with their guide, Mol and driver, Carlos.
