Japanese blooming newspaper, the Mainichi Shinbun!

News literally sowing and blooming to make gardens and balconies more beautiful!

In the collective imagination, we see paper burning to warm us during cold winter times or to light our barbecues !  But we don’t think about making it recyclable to the point of returning it to the earth!

Bookstore recycling, used books all around!

With World Book Day coming the day after tomorrow, there’s something that has to be said! Cultivating oneself is often expensive. Once you start stacking books in your arms, prices can add up very quickly without you noticing it until the very end!

Even if choosing the pocket format can help, accessing the book market at full price sadly isn’t for everyone. This is where the used books market comes in!

Recycle Bookstore is one of many actors of this market today, but started proposing used books over 40 years ago (1962)! Its concept is to sell thousands of books at low prices, from many different universes and about a lot of topics: Art, Science-Fiction, History, Science, classic literature, gardening…

The books proposed at the Bookstore  are donated or traded, so there’s always new ones to chose from.

Two bookstores are open, one in San Jose and one in Campbell (both in California), and both are pretty well-rated on Yelp! Of course, they propose different books on certain topics, but that’s one of the things that make those shops special!

What are the other things, will you ask?

Well, they also propose some DVDs and CDs, rare, signed or limited-edition books, friendly staff and… Cats.

Those cuties aren’t for sale, but you can enjoy their company while you wander around and browse the shelves looking for your next literature treasure!

So if you happen to drop by San Jose or Campbell, and if you’re not allergic to cat fur, don’t forget to check out those awesome book stores!

Cinemagraphs Harry Potter-themed!

At BlookUp, we often face some technical constraints that can not be removed though we’d love to. Among them is the integration of gifs! You surely have already dreamt about illustrations that move by themselves on paper pages!

No need for sound! It’s all about the pleasure of seeing the clouds move, people smile, all of this while continuing to enjoy the rough and soft touch of a paper book…

There’s a fascinating universe in which we can find such an object: The one of Harry Potter, of course! Somebody else loved the idea of moving pictures! Daria Khoroshavina, a Russian artist, who combined her talents in photography and animation in order to illustrate, in her own way, how wizards in her “Halloween Potions and Spells”gallery!

A book with an image in motion “So, according to that picture, if my shrinking potion is red and filled with bubbles, I messed up”

But what are Cinemagraphs anyway?

Well, while gifs play a complete animation without necessarily making the transition between the beginning and the end very subtle, cinemagraphs are usually produced by animating only a part of a photo in a continuous and fluid-like movement that contrasts with the rest of the picture, that remains motionless.

A Harry Potter book cinemagraphIs the definition still a little obscure? “Lumos” !

Cinemagraphs originally come from the world of fashion and have already been adaptedy by several artists in various ranges of magnificent and relaxing animated images that you can watch with the sound of the rain or the sea in the background!

  • Cinemagraphs.com, the website created by Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck who are also the creators of the concept of Cinemagraphs!
  • Philippe Cabaret and his blog Philippoc, a French photographer often paying tribute to Paris through his creations.

And if you feel like this is going to be your new hobby, you can even find applications to make your own cinemagraphs!

A few months ago, we asked you to share your thoughts about our new product, the book of Facebook, and your opinion really mattered to us!

You can select one or more type·s of content, and decide whether to keep the index or not!

If you chose the option “Import Comment” in step 1 but are having second thoughts and rather remove them. You just have to set the “maximum comments” on 0.

Event :”Literature Vs Traffic” in Toronto

Today we’re going back in time !  For those who, like us, have missed an impressive and ephemeral artistic installation. The one that illuminated and animated downtown Toronto during the night of October 1st, 2016.
books-street-hagerman-toronto

The anonymous group of artists Luzinterruptus took 12 days and gathered 50 volunteers to cover Hagerman Street in downtown Toronto. All done with nearly 10,000 books, all donated by the Salvation Army. Among those, some were surprisingly old and were part of private donations.

The main event in the streets of toronto

The installation, named “Literature vs. Traffic”, had already been illegally carried out in Madrid and New York. This time it obtained the authorization of Melbourne to perform there. The artists were invited to the event “Nuit Blanche Toronto 2016” in order to reproduce the experience.

Luzinterruptus confirms that in 5 years “The meaning of this piece has not changed as the battle between pedestrians and vehicles still goes on in most of the world’s large cities and it is hard to find real, workable solutions. Despite the efforts on the part of some cites to reduce downtown traffic, they can only go as far as to create a Car-free day ! All to have an idea as to how we would live without them”. The collective adds on its website: “We want literature to take over the streets and conquer public spaces, freely offering those passersby a traffic-free place which, for some hours, will succumb to the humble power of the written word”.

books-street-hagerman-toronto-floor

Hagerman Street was closed for one night and replaced the come-and-go of cars by hundreds of pedestrians ! All moving between illuminated books, resulting in a magic and impressive ballet. Passers-by were free to consult the books at their own pace. They were also allowed to choose the ones they would take home in order to preserve a small piece of this lively and interactive work. It took them only 10 hours to empty the street almost completely. They finally, in the early morning, gave back the road traffic.

Who knows, if this event comes back in a (very) distant future ?! Perhaps one day there will be blooks among a myriad of other lighted books!

First, tell us about yourself ! You, your passions, your hobbies, your projects…

Hi, I’m Melody Pendlebury and I am a really indecisive, mess of a person but I try my best. I am a senior at the University of North Florida as an Elementary Education major. It seems as if I’m ready to graduate and start my career, but honestly, I have a quarter life crisis daily. One thing that’s pretty unique about me is that I’m married. This is shocking to a lot of people because I do look like a 12 year old pretending to be an adult, but I’m actually still young but 22. Even though some people think this is the craziest thing in the world, I’m still a normal 22 year old person and a normal married person trapped into one body. Obviously I’m very passionate about my dog, hence the name of my blog. I am also very passionate about health and fitness. This doesn’t mean that I eat healthy all the time or have a rock hard body, because I like to keep life fun and try not to be too serious. This blog is my first attempt at writing something that I actually want people to read and I still get nervous about every article. I post. Futur projects that I you can expect to see in the future are probably going to be more exercise tutorials and recipes. I love writing about things that interest me and am hoping I’m writing about things that interest other people as well.

What is your blog about? Why? Do you have other blogs? If so, what do they talk about?

I think my blog (https://lifewithadogandablog.com) is a little scattered brain. If I had to say what the main content of my blog was, it would probably be health and fitness. Other than that, I like to write about vacations I’ve taken, how I have saved money on various things, some lifestyle tips, all while trying to fit my dog into everything. This is the first blog that I have ever written other than my numerous diaries that I never let anyone read growing up. I hope to build and improve my content in the future.

Why did you want to turn your blog ” life with a dog and a blog”  into a book?

in today’s world everything is digital. This isn’t a bad thing because hey, lets save the trees, but sometimes its nice to have a physical copy of something. Since this is the beginning of my first blog I thought it would be good to have something for me to read and show people and hopefully something I can use to reminisce in the future.

How did you find out about BlookUp?

I found out about BlookUp because their blog followed my blog. I was curious about who they were and started to check them out. I loved how simple and accessible the website was and the the product was something I absolutely loved.

What are the positive and negative points of the making of your blook?

Making my blook was super easy. All I had to do was press a few buttons and bam, it was finished. The only negative things I could possibly think of about making my blook was that there was not a lot of templates to choose from. This could also be a positive as well because you don’t have to overthink it and you always come out with a beautiful blook.

Do you enjoy the final result? What does your family and friends think about your blook ” life with a dog and a blog “?

i LOVE the the final result! It was so cute and unique and it was awesome to see my blog come to life. My husband also loves my blook and insists that we keep it on the coffee table.

Yeah, that’s a geat coffee table decoration!
